The Teacher's Almanac
The Teacher's Almanac is essential to art educators and home
schoolers in the proper management and organization of their art
classes. Artistic students often have a diverse array of personalities
and attitudes, actually that pertains to students in the elementary,
secondary, and high school levels as well. This volume will help
educators assist their artists to stay on course and on schedule. All
of the material developed and compiled in this volume will make an
educator's school year run a little smoother.
Being organized is essential to the management of any successful
corporation and the same holds true for teachers. A book entitled, "If
You Don't Know Where You Are Going You Might End Up Somewhere Else" was
introduced to Joan Maresh-Hansen during a goal setting class. This book
inspired Joan to develop successful systems in her classroom. Her
passion to share her knowledge inspired her to write The Teacher's
Almanac to help other educators manage their classrooms with efficiency
and order.
Included in this volume are effective classroom management and
organization techniques. Educators will learn how to enhance their
interaction and communication to students so that educators can get to
the business of teaching art instead of having to continuously
"discipline" an unruly class. The Teacher's Almanac will eliminate
confusion and chaos to promote order and productivity in the art
classroom. As a result, their classrooms are organized, creative, and
nurturing environments where students learn to develop a positive work
attitude and good work ethics as they pursue their artistic potential.
This volume includes:
Why Study Art? (introductory presentation)
Effective class rules and requirements
Organizational techniques: seating charts, clean-up charts, evaluations and more.
Calendar to outline course of study
Suggested course of study for each level.

This volume emphasizes drawing, which is the most universal form of art
expression. Educators will learn how to instruct students effectively
in realizing the shift that must occur, within the students' minds, in
order to successfully draw what they see. Numerous traditional and
experimental approaches to drawing and seeing processes are introduced.
Included are exemplary artworks to evidence the effectiveness of the
lessons. Sample artworks are from Joan Maresh-Hansen's collection of
student artwork, archived from her 34 years of teaching. Such examples
encourage and inspire students to realize that young individuals can
achieve great art.
Included projects are:
Blind and modified contour drawing
Effective use of sketchbooks
Gesture drawing
Portraying people for a likeness
Working with still life,
Perspective
Pencil, pen, and ink techniques
Frederick Franck who wrote " Zen Seeing, Zen Drawing," states:
". . . my eyes have always been in love with the splendors of the world
that surround us. My response to what I see has been to draw, and the
more I have drawn the greater has become my delight in seeing and my
wonder at the great gift of being able to see. One day I realized
suddenly that the seeing and the drawing had fused into one single
undivided act. I called it seeing/drawing. It was a revelation, and it
changed my life."
This volume will help educators convey the method of rendering what is
seen on paper or canvas. Students will learn how to unify the idea of
seeing and drawing into a cohesive act that will encourage them to
continuously practice drawing to improve their skill.

Design Decisions—Coming SOON!
This volume concentrates on the elements and principles of design.
Materials in this volume will help educators and home schoolers
introduce the building blocks of art to students with clarity. As a
result, students gain an increased understanding of effective use of
design that will bring forth order into their artwork.
Sections of the volume include the following elements and principles of design:
Line
Shape
Color
Texture
Value
Form
Space
Balance
Contrast
Emphasis
Rhythm
Movement
Harmony
Repetition
The materials include innovative ideas in presenting the above concepts
to students in an organized structure. This volume will convey to
students that the elements and principles of design work together much
like a symphony orchestra-where individual musicians practice their
instrument individually before joining the group. As a whole, the
orchestra can then create beautiful music together. The same is true in
design. Each technique must be understood and practiced separately then
used together.
This volume will provide educators with the tools to present these
concepts in an organized and clearly structured fashion. The materials
communicate the significance of these principles together and
separately in the process of creating various art projects.

Artist's Idea Books: Altered Books, Sketchbooks, and Journals
Artists keep sketchbooks and journals in the same way writers keep
diaries. Young artists need a medium to record their sketches, sources

on how to create handmade books, sketchbooks, and journals. A
personalized book, sketchbook, or journal made by the artist truly
creates the feeling of ownership. A section on altering books is also
provided to allow artists to put their own artistic touch on an already
made book in order to personalize it and really make it their own.
Included in this volume are clear step-by-step instructions on binding
books using inexpensive materials that can be found around the house.
Ideas are introduced for hundreds of projects that reinforce concepts
taught at each art level. This volume will also inspire educators to
spark ideas of their own.
The section on altering books focuses on the newest trend sweeping the
country. Altered book techniques and assignments for lots of projects
on altering pre-made books in order to personalize the generic book to
the artists' aesthetic style.
Sources are also provided in this volume for further investigation of this new popular art form.
This volume is a collaborative effort with one of my teaching buddies
who created and presented the concept of sketchbooks as an artist's
IDEA Book which can be used as a reference for years.

Art Careers: Living the Life you Love
Art Careers: Living the Life you Love is a classroom-based on
the job training exercise that prepares art students how to think and
work as professional artists. With 58 career simulation exercises, this
volume presents numerous possibilities for the creative person to make
a living in the field of art. Students are asked to solve a particular
problem or task that would be found in a work environment such as
creating a book illustration, business logo, or package design just to
name a few. Each assignment is done to increase students' awareness as
to what kind of skills are needed to be successful in that arena.
The exercises transform students' weaknesses into strengths to increase
their competitive advantage in pursuing a creative career. Art Careers:
Living the Life you Love also develops students' work ethic in any
field of endeavor, and this volume truly prepares the budding artist
into a professional creative mind that can excel in the creative field.
Armed with an education, and the skills needed to succeed in a
particular field can eliminate the idea of a starving artist.
Artists are passionate about their work. Art Careers: Living the Live
you Love is an important volume in awakening amateur artists with
desires to be creative professionals who love what they do while making
money doing it. Students will truly love the projects and they will
appreciate the fact that their art teacher had the wisdom and foresight
to prepare them in this career simulation project.
Author Marsha Sinetar states in her book "Do What You Love Most and the Money Will Follow:"
"Work is a natural vehicle for self expression because we spend most of
our time in its thrall. It simply makes no sense to turn off our
personality, squelch our real abilities, forget our need for
stimulation and personal growth forty hours out of every week."
Art Careers: Living the Live you Love is a resource every passionate
and dedicated educator must have to incorporate in their curriculum to
positively impact the lives of their art students beyond the classroom.
